It is deep into the night, 2:18 a.m., and my right knee has begun its familiar, needy throbbing; it’s a level of discomfort that sits right on the edge of being unbearable. The ground seems more unforgiving tonight than it was twenty-four hours ago, a physical impossibility that I nonetheless believe completely. The only break in the silence is the ghost of a motorbike engine somewhere in the distance. I am sweating slightly, despite the air not being particularly warm. My consciousness instantly labels these sensations as "incorrect."
The Anatomy of Pain-Plus-Meaning
The term "Chanmyay pain" arises as a technical tag for the discomfort. I didn't consciously choose the word; it just manifested. What was once just sensation is now "pain-plus-interpretation."
Am I observing it correctly? Should I be noting it more clearly, or perhaps with less intensity? Or am I clinging to the sensation by paying it so much attention? The actual ache in my knee is dwarfed by the massive cloud of analytical thoughts surrounding it.
The "Chanmyay Doubt" Loop
I make an effort to observe only the physical qualities: the heat and the pressure. Suddenly, doubt surfaces, cloaked in the language of a "reality check." Chanmyay doubt. Perhaps I am over-efforting. Maybe I am under-efforting, or perhaps this simply isn't the right way to practice.
I worry that I missed a key point in the teachings years ago, and I've been building my practice on a foundation of error ever since.
That thought hits harder than the physical pain in my knee. I start to adjust my back, catch the movement, and then adjust again because I'm convinced I'm sitting crooked. My back tightens in response, as if it’s offended I didn't ask permission. I feel a knot of anxiety forming in my chest, a physical manifestation of my doubt.
Communal Endurance vs. Private Failure
I recall how much simpler it was to sit with pain when I was surrounded by a silent group of practitioners. In a hall, the ache felt like part of the human condition; here, it feels like my own personal burden. It feels like a secret exam that I am currently bombing. I can't stop the internal whisper that tells me I'm reinforcing the wrong habits. I worry that I am just practicing my own neuroses instead of the Dhamma.
The Trap of "Proof" and False Relief
I read a passage on the dangers of over-striving, and my mind screamed, "See? This is you!" It felt like a definitive verdict: "You have been practicing incorrectly this whole time." There is a weird sense of "aha!" mixed with a "no!" I'm glad to have an answer, but terrified of how much work it will take to correct. Sitting here now, I feel both at once. My jaw is clenched. I consciously soften my face, only for the tension to return almost immediately.
The Shifting Tide of Discomfort
The ache moves to a different spot, which is far more irritating than a steady sensation. I was looking for something stable to observe; I wanted a "fixed" object. It feels like a moving target—disappearing only to strike again elsewhere. I attempt to meet it with equanimity, but I cannot. I notice the failure. Then I wonder if noticing the failure is progress or just more thinking.
The doubt isn't theatrical; it's a subtle background noise that never stops questioning my integrity. I remain silent in the face of the question, because "I don't know" is the only truth I have. My breath is shallow, but I don’t correct it. I’ve learned that forcing anything right now just adds another layer of tension to untangle later.
The sound of the clock continues, but I resist the urge to check the time. My limb is losing its feeling, replaced by the familiar static of a leg "falling asleep." I remain, though a part of me is already preparing to shift. It’s all very confused. The "technical" and the "personal" have fused into a single, uncomfortable reality.
I am not leaving this sit with an answer. The discomfort hasn't revealed a grand truth, and the uncertainty is still there. I am simply present with the fact that confusion is also an object of mindfulness, even if I don't have a strategy for this mess. Just breathing, just aching, just staying. And perhaps that simple presence is the Chanmyay Sayadaw only thing that isn't a lie.
